Arkansas native and Distinguished Military Graduate of ROTC, Arkansas State University, Representative Wood commissioned in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He earned his Juris Doctor degree at the University of Arkansas in 1974. As an officer in the US Army, he flew for the 1st Air Calvary Division as a helicopter gunship pilot in the Vietnam conflict. In 1965, he served with the 82nd Airborne Division in the Dominican Republic. He received over 20 decorations and honors of valor, including the Bronze Star; the Meritorious Service Medal; the Air Medal with 13 oakleaf clusters; the Army Commendation Medal with "V" device and a 2 oakleaf cluster; the Purple Heart; the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star device; the Vietnamese Campaign Medal and the Valorous Unit Citation with one oakleaf cluster and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry Unit Citation with Palm device. As a retired Army Major, he is a member of the First Calvary Division Association, the Association of the US Army, the American Legion and V.F.W. He is also chairman of the Arkansas POW/MIA Verification Task Force. Doctor Wood retired in 1996 as House Representative after serving his 10th term in the General Assembly of Arkansas, representing District 63, Pulaski County. He was one of 6 lawyers from Pulaski County in the House of Representatives and was a member of the Arkansas Aviation and Aerospace Commission. He is an attorney with Wood Law Firm in Sherwood, Arkansas.
